The Apple Pencil is due for an update. The stylus that Steve Jobs never wanted, that became a product that no-one else wanted, until it was improved by new tech in the iPad Pro, is up for a refresh.
The Apple Pencil
The stylus that Steve Jobs never wanted, was introduced after his death, and nearly died its own death as a version 1 product that never impressed and never quite worked as magically as everyone expected it to. While it was great technology and a great innovation at the time, it just never sold very well.
Its saviour was the upgraded iPad Pro, bringing an improved screen technology to talk to the pencil, and updated pencil technology to talk to the iPad.
Recharging it by plugging it in to the Lightning port was never ideal, and paying $30 for a $0.50 piece of rubber to hold it close to your iPad was even more ludicrous.
It was the stranger of two weird design decisions from Apple after the departure of Steve Jobs:
- The recharging method of the Apple Pencil and
We do not recommend plugging in your Apple Pencil to the connector on your Magic Mouse 2.
Although the Apple Pencil was designed for artsy-types to draw and illustrate with, it was also handy for ordinary people to jot notes at work or in class.
it could well be that Education is the saviour of the revised Apple Pencil 2 that looks exactly the same as the Apple Pencil 1 and 1.5. With school districts across the country lamenting the failure of student's handwriting, as more and more young people take to typing on screens and keyboards, marketing the new pencil as a student accessory for school could finally produce the volume sales that Apple needs to make its hobby a hit.
Until next time,
