GPU Prices falling in Australia

Updated: Dec 29, 2019

Wow. Just when you thought there would be a quiet end to 2018, suddenly there's big news. Gamers and Crypto-Miners alike are rejoicing that GPU prices have suddenly fallen sharply in Australia.

Over-priced.

For most of 2017 and 2018, GPUs were overpriced in Australia. Considering that Australia is geographically close to Asia, where the bulk of manufacturing takes places, and that Australia is filled with gamers and crypto-currency miners, there has always been consistent demand for GPUs.

I say consistent, rather than rampant, because demand never really boiled over and out-stripped supply. the supply was always there, partly because we are so close to Asia. However, prices were inflated, and late in 2018, a standard GeForce GTX 1080 was reaching a price point of $1200.

Prices have fallen sharply.

Now, late in December 2018, with CES 2019 just around the corner, and with nVidia and AMD getting ready to release their new product lines, resellers are wanting to move what's left of their inventory before the end of January.

Even at the end of November 2018, prices ranged between $900 and $1200 for various GPUs.

After the launch of the GeForce GTC 20-series, the 10-series GPU prices have fallen, and the corresponding AMD Radeon GPU prices have also taken a sudden tumble.

After Christmas, many resellers were left with too much stock.
