Windows Phone OS is dead. We know that already. However, Microsoft isn't going limp on mobile all together. Microsoft will skip phones, and tackle tablets on the path to consumer and enterprise mobility.
Windows Phone OS is dead
We know that Windows Phone as an operating system is dead. Microsoft drove the last nail in to the coffin a long time ago, and even after its purchase of Nokia, even Nokia is building phones again, without Microsoft.
Skip phones, tackle tablets
So, when we think about Microsoft and mobility, we no longer think 'phones'. We think laptops and tablets.
When we think laptops, we think directly of the Surface Laptop, Surface Book, Surface Book 2, and other laptops from other manufacturers.
When we think tablets, we think directly of the Surface Pro.
However, there will soon be a new string on Microsoft's bow when it comes to tablets, and that is the Microsoft-Qualcomm collaboration on Snapdragon 845 tablets.
Snapdragon 845 tablets
Qualcomm and Microsoft have been working together since 2015 to launch a new range of Snapdragon powered tablets, and while there is some speculation that these will first ship with Snapdragon 835, those have been killed. The launch will take place with Snapdragon 845 powered tablets, from a range of OEMs including HP, Lenovo, Samsung, Acer, ASUS, and potentially OnePlus and Razer.
Qualcomm and Microsoft are providing the platform and the marketing, and curating an ecosystem of tablets from other manufacturers, which will feature Snapdragon chips and Microsoft apps.
To make things perfectly clear, Microsoft and Qualcomm are partners in the race for tablet supremacy.
