Those who kept their eyes on the numbers in the specification sheet when Apple launched the iPhone 8 and iPhone X may have wondered why it didn't add up. Now we have the answer.
Upon the release of the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X, Apple included the ability for the phones to charge wirelessly, using the Qi wireless charging standard. Those who kept their eyes on the numbers would have noticed that the specification sheet stated 5-watt wireless charging would be making its debut as the charging mode for the new iPhones.
Later in the same launch presentation, Apple demonstrated a Mophie wireless charger, and announced that Belkin and Mophie branded chargers would be available in Apple stores and online.
These chargers supported 7.5-watt wireless charging.
The Answer:
With the future release of iOS 11.2, we have the answer: iOS11.2 will support 7.5-watt charging. So, after a quick software upgrade, customers can take advantage of a higher electricity transfer rate, theoretically enabling faster charging on the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X.
Some time in 2018, Apple will release their own Apple-branded wireless charger, called AirPower.
AirPower will be the first Qi charger capable of charging multiple devices at once. You'll be able to charge your iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods, and AirPods Case at the same time on the same power mat.
